To fulfill the need for a west-side Portland group, we are thrilled to announce the Tigard chapter! This group was started by a mom and secondary language arts teacher with 18 years experience. This is Connie’s story:
Connie was diagnosed with ADD and Dyslexia in college after struggling in some required classes. The diagnosis was transformative in how she viewed herself as a student, no longer did she feel “dumb”, rather she saw her self as a dyslexic. However, she didn’t pay much attention to the resources available for dyslexics until her 10 year old son was diagnosed in 2013. Since this time, Connie has worked vigilantly in understanding current laws and resources associated with dyslexia. Last fall, she enrolled and completed the Dyslexia Advocated Certificated program through the Dyslexia Training Institute. Noticing a need for a Decoding Dyslexia branch closer to her home, she sought to start a new branch in the Tigard area. She is excited to see the growing support and awareness for dyslexia, and wishes to help build support for students, parents, and teachers who deal with dyslexia on a daily basis.
