This family-friendly event is a 1-mile walk to raise awareness for kids with dyslexia. Kids are encouraged to create and become their favorite superhero! Be creative, think out-side-the-box, or invent your own superhero costume! Enjoy art activities, bubble mania, Zumba warmup and more! Walkers can get discounted deluxe ride bracelets to Oaks Amusement Park for the entire day after the walk for a greatly reduced retail rate! This is a fun way to raise awareness and connect with your community while supporting kids who learn differently and the work of Decoding Dyslexia Oregon.

Presented by Claudette Rushing
Claudette will explain the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) investigative process. She will provide an overview of how OCR investigations work and also the requirements for students with disabilities under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
About the presenter: Claudette Rushing is an attorney at the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR). She has been with OCR for the past five years and has worked extensively with disability discrimination and harassment complaints and cases related to the right to a free appropriate public education (FAPE). Prior to joining OCR, she worked as the Oregon Department of Education’s Legal Specialist for IDEA complaints, mediation requests, and due process hearings. Ms. Rushing has also worked as an arbitrator and an IDEA state hearing officer. Ms. Rushing was formerly a reading and language arts teacher, and she specialized in working with gifted and talented children with dyslexia and other reading differences. She lives in Seattle and enjoys hiking, yoga, reading, meditation, and spending time with her daughter.

About the facilitator: Dr. Scott Smith was an Instructional Coach with the InterMountain ESD in Pendleton. He has been in education for the past 38 years. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Western Oregon University, Masters from Lesley University, and his Doctorate from Northcentral University in Arizona. Dr. Smith spent 27 years in elementary classrooms in Umatilla. He also was an Assistant Professor at Eastern Oregon University in the Elementary Pre-Service teacher program prior to joining the InterMountain ESD. His major area of focus is in reading instruction and pre-reading skills. Dr. Smith lives in Hermiston, with his wife.

Navigating the Special Education System: How one Mom secured a private school placement and compensatory services for her son.
Presented by Venesta Poleon
Meet Venesta Poleon and hear her story of how she successfully navigated the labyrinth of Special Education processes and barriers in New York City Public Schools. Our evening will begin with a 20 minute recording of Vanesta sharing her son’s story, followed by a short presentation. Lastly, there will be time for question and answers with Vanesta, allowing participants to apply her experiential wisdom to their current challenges.
About the presenter: Venesta is a mom of three children and is currently pursuing a degree in Early Childhood at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. She will be completing her Associate’s degree this December and will continue her studies, specializing in Special Education. She is a self-taught advocate for families and children with special needs with over 10 years of learned experience. Her personal journey has allowed her to connect other families to the necessary resources to be effective advocates for their children. Venesta believes that every child can learn in their own unique way and must be given an equitable opportunity to reach their full potential.
